FREIRAUM- BERLIN
|
For the Freiraum project, the Goethe-Institut is drawing on its Europe-wide network to kindle dialogue between partners from the cultural sector and civil society and, in two-city tandems, to look into some crucial and highly topical questions: What is the state of freedom in present-day Europe? Where is it at risk? How can we shore it up?
Artistic and discursive formats addressing these issues have been created in about forty different places all over Europe. And projects from Nicosia to Carlisle, from Madrid to Tallinn, have been presented to the public since early summer 2017. Freiraum went to Berlin from 12 to 17 March 2019. In association with the ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics and the Mercator Foundation, selected Freiraum tandems will present the results of their exchange. The programme includes an exhibition of videos and installations as well as film screenings, discussions, performances, and concerts. The Mercator Foundation is hosting a so-called “Open Situation Room”, an experimental event in which German and international experts, Freiraum partners, local activists and politicians will discuss various aspects of freedom. A series of joint activities spread over the duration of a year, planned through collaboration, mutual exchange and audience participation. The questions posed by the two cities were addressed at the same time. Carlisle’s question on isolation became the focus of the activities in both cities and the creation of artworks through participation and learning. Thessaloniki’s question on the emancipating power of emerging technologies provided the method ology to produce concepts and art works; as well as the tools to collaborate over distance and present the work to a wider audience. THE EXHIBITION IN BERLINThis exhibition presents a handful of the many different projects carried out as part of the GoetheInstitut’s pan European Freiraum project. These collaborative projects between partner cities all across Europe explore the meaning of freedom, the reaches and boundaries of free speech, and the construction of free spaces. They address identity issues and economic constraints, human rights and migration, social media and individual happiness. With input from a wide range of people, including students and researchers, architects and artists, the exhibition makes use of interviews, poetry, spoken word performances and storytelling to seek out realms of freedom. A father skating naked across the ice, a city haunted by a ghost called Liberty, a theatre company planning to take over parliament, local residents talking about home renovation — each of these stories asks a fundamental question about freedom: What would a free society look like?

With the contribution of poets from Carlisle --Kim Braschko Hoelterhoff (and her two childrenMaya and Henry), Susan Cartwright-Smith,John Chambers, Ruby Evans, Philip Hewitson, Jane MossLuffrum, James Scott Riddick As an academic researcher and audio practitioner, one of my main interests is understanding the intimate qualities of radiophony. The radio voice, this fragment of a person that one does not know, may contain some of their most intimate qualities. In this project a space is created that simulates the unseen intimacies of the airwaves. Here, voices will meet and converse privately yet freely, not only with words but with the intimacy of the voice as pure sound. The voices in this artwork were collected in ThessalonikiGreece and CarlisleUnited Kingdom. The anonymous Greekspeaking voices were collected by the Media Lab group in Thessaloniki after a workshop I delivered. The aim here was for local people to bring me the voices of their community, rather than me selecting these as an outsider who might carry preconceptions. The Englishspeaking voices belong to poets from the Speak Easy poetry group in Carlisle: Kim BraschkoHoelterhoff (and her two children Maya and Henry),Susan CartwrightSmith, John Chambers, Ruby Evans, Philip Hewitson, Jane MossLuffrum, James Scott Riddick. The poets were sent audio clips of the voices from Greece along with three short poems I wrote deriving from the content of the stories collected in Thessaloniki. The poets were asked to write poems as responses to these voices. Despite only listening to voices they could not understand and my poems only being a very abstract representation of those voices, the poets in Carlisle absolutely captured the essence of those stories and provided very emotive responses. I edited these voices together in a conversation that reveals how the intricacies, fears, aspirations of distant communities might be much closer than they seem. The voices in this artwork are an intimate aural tapestry of all those things that we have in common. EVI KARATHANASOPOULOUDr. Evi Karathanasopoulou has worked as a radio producer and presenter in Greece and the United Kingdom. She gained her PhD at the University of Sunderland, researching Radio Theory and issues around the Radio Voice and Intimacy. She is now a Lecturer in Audio Production at Bournemouth University, teaching on a range of media production and theory units, including interactive documentary production. She is currently involved in practice-based research, using Audio Production as a means to further research the intimate capacities of aural media. She is also producing work with an interdisciplinary focus on Audio Media, Sound Studies, Architecture and Education.
