Socially engaged machine Laboratory of applied creativity
LABattoir is a new initiative of the Municipality of Thessaloniki's Department of Culture based at the recently refurbished building of the old municipal slaughterhouse, in collaboration with ArtBOX.
LABattoir is a socially engaged machine for the production of culture; a laboratory of applied creativity that responds to society’s needs and problems introducing solutions and alternative strategies with the contribution of the artist as catalyst and the citizen as co-producer. Placing creativity in the centre, various cycles of activities focus on different disciplines (contemporary art, design, music, theatre, performance, moving image, new technologies, science, etc.), practices (art for social change, community based art), concepts (the commons, place-making, capability approach) and sectors (education, social policies, cultural production, creative economy, international markets). The identification of the city’s social needs and assets is carried out with the active contribution of the entire city’s creative forces -art and creative professionals, academic institutions, cultural and activist organisations, that are invited to act as co-developers of the LABattoir programme. The existing creative potential of the city grows through collaborations with internationally established artists, creators and experts that lead to innovative projects, products or services, and at the same time provide training and skills to socially sensitive groups (young unemployed, refugees, women etc.).
