Virorum illustrium vitae
The work "Virorum illustrium vitae” by Artemis Potamianou is a video installation – projection made up of two videos in direct synergy between them. The first is a selection of scenes showing well known artists while they work, taken from movies that deal with their lives, and also scenes where established artists talk about their work. The second projection is a “collage” of documentary and movie scenes that deal with the life of athletes.
The life, the struggle, the fear of failure and the continuous search for success, the mechanisms and the “backstage activities” for gaining establishment are some of the issues examined, compared in the two parallel projections, that comment on how common the lives of athletes and artists ultimately are. Through this comparison, the anatomy of the production system and establishment of heroes according to the models that contemporary western society needs is succeeded. The real image and its beautified directed presentation compose a number of images on the way of life of artists and athletes. The work is a strong comment on how unreal but also stereotypical is the way that artists and athletes are presented to the public through Hollywood movies, but also how the artists and athletes themselves choose to promote their myth reproducing the same stereotypes. |
