The wandering will continue…
Thessaloniki Bureau of the Organisation for the Promotion of Greek Culture offers the opportunity for an exhibition-search for limits: limits in relation to the topic of the exhibition, as well as the way in which the venture will take place. An experience. Not an experiment, despite real limitations and prerequisites. An open procedure of communication. Immediately after the New Year 2004, the dialogue between the coordinator and the first artists began. A small nucleus. Surprise, enthusiasm. The first spark. The topic, the procedures, the participants, everything had to be reset, redefined. The procedure began. Roles were finalised. The coordinator would ensure that rules were adhered to, while distancing himself from selecting works and artists, turning himself into a focal point collecting information, processing it and adapting it to a framework and channelling it in all directions. Artists selected artists, they themselves decided on their own works, the way in which they would approach the topic. The first suggestions for artists’ names were heard. Typical criterion: the artists must be experiencing migration or their work must refer to it. Substantial criterion: common codes, mutual appreciation, common underground language. Conversations were deep, permitting the emergence of multiple ways of approaching the topic and the procedure. First thoughts for a title which expresses the breadth and scale of prospects-possibilities were discussed. Meetings were organized in various cities: Madrid, Berlin. New York, Paris. Hundreds of e-mails, phone calls, contacts. The list of eleven was finalised. The procedure was tough. Enthusiasm, passion. The artists participated in all procedures – even designing their pages in the catalogue. The exhibition is almost ready. A procedure-experience-exchange-communication has been completed and the result is ready to be presented. The exhibition: eleven different viewpoints restricted only by technical limitations. Nomads of the world – nomads of a globalised era, which owes them a lot – will pull up for approximately one month side-by-side at the Museum of Modern Art of Thessaloniki. Any Place Any. Any place is a homeland? The wandering will continue… Christos Savvidis The Preparation / Installation |
